HANDS-ON
TRAINING COURSE
ON CARBON FIBRE
COMPOSITE MATERIALS

Theoretical Content

Hands-on training course on composite applications using carbon fibres as a structural reinforcement element.

The content is focused mainly on applications with preimpregnated carbon fabrics (prepregs), manufactured with high performance thermosetting resins. In addition, other vacuum processes are also dealt with in-depth vacuum infusion and hand lay-up.

-This training course introduces attendees to the CFRP world (Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastics) and its application/manufacturing techniques.

-We will study the main types of carbon fibres and their properties, their availability in the market, and how and when they are used.

-We will analyse the most important kinds of thermosetting resins used in parts and moulds production as well as their properties, compatibility, etc.

-We will study their mechanical, physical and chemical properties, as well as their compatibility with each other etc.

-This training course is focused mainly on epoxy, urethane-acrylate and vinyl ester resins.

Also, we will analyse the most common core materials for manufacturing lightweight and rigid sandwich structures: balsa wood, PVC, PET, SAN, non-wovens and honeycombs.

Adhesives will be another essential topic throughout this training course: types, properties, compatibility, heat resistance…

Practical Content

In this training course, the student will learn, step by step, all the manufacturing processes used for the production of prepreg carbon/epoxy parts and moulds, used in high performance applications (aeronautics, automotive, nautical, wind power, competition, etc.).

-We will study the main characteristics and properties of these materials.

-We will produce a hollow underwater generator blade by hand lay-up, that will later be injected with epoxy foam.

-A 5.5 m long sea kayak hull will be made by vacuum infusion using dry carbon fibres and different cores.

You will learn how to manufacture aesthetic carbon parts with an exposed finish (cosmetic), a carbon composite mould using prepregs and another by manual lamination, as well as a U-shaped tubular part, using glass/epoxy prepreg with SHD BPS (Body Panel System).

In addition, different monolithic and sandwich laminates will be prepared, in order to analyse the importance of the reinforcement orientations and the choice of the propper cores, in order to improve flexural, torsional and shear strength. We will study structural methacrylate adhesives for carbon-carbon, carbon-metal, carbon-plastics and carbon-other composites bonding.

The first day we hand out theoretical and practical manuals to the students. If the student completes the course successfully, he/she is given a diploma certifying that he/she has passed the course and the student becomes a new "Super Composite", ready to help others in this type of applications with composite materials.

Accommodation is not included in the course fees. Students choose their own accommodation, although due to proximity and price almost everyone stays at the Hotal el Volante (https://www.elvolantehr.com/hostal/) or the Hotel Alfonso I (www.hotelalfonsoprimero.com).

1.495 € per student, but we offer a 20% discount for unemployed people, who can prove it with the corresponding updated documentation. Spanish companies can also subsidise the training of their employees through FUNDAE. This means a saving of around €300 per student. We simply recommend that you bring a notebook and a pen. The student receives a full set of PPE to ensure that he/she works with all the necessary safety during the training. Professional mask with filters, FPP2 mask, nitrile gloves, safety goggles and overalls are provided.
Comfortable, sporty clothing is recommended. If you have comfortable safety boots, it is ideal to bring them. No branded suits or shoes, please! Resins stain!

Our face-to-face courses are intensive, and have a duration of more than 40 hours, spread over 5 days from Monday to Friday.
